On the one night that the 16-year-old Rowan asks for a chance to get out of town with her bestie to go to a concert, her mother says no. But that doesn’t stop Rowan from going anyway. She sneaks out and takes off with her best friend Libby, determined to have a night of fun. But once she returns home, Rowan finds her mother, uncle and brother bloody and beaten, and her younger sisters crying while hugging each other. Strange men are in her house. Men who look like they are up to no good. Men she knows that she must take care of in order to save her family.

 

The reader gets to read this story from different points-of-view: Rowan, Rowan’s mother Roxanna, Uncle Ralph, and the three men who are attacking Rowan’s family. This change in POV is not disruptive to the reading experience. Sometimes the changed POV happens from chapter to chapter, or in one of the chapters. When it is done in a chapter, it can be a little jarring, but this changed POV helps to move the story forward. For example, in chapter eight, it starts with the character Strozzi (one of the bad men), jumps to Uncle Ralph, then jumps to Barker (another one of the bad men). These changes allow the reader to get a better idea of what the characters are feeling/thinking as a scene unfolds, and these perceptions adds to a reader’s understanding of them.

 

I appreciated how the author shares the background of the bad men in a way that is comfortable for readers to receive. The backgrounds are not provided as info dumps. Some bits of information is shared here and there in different parts of the story. The initial information shared when they first appeared in the story, however, lets the reader know that these three men are VERY bad men with evil intentions. It’s actually a good introduction because it lets the reader know that some seriously horrific actions are about to go down because of these three bad men. (And the author does not disappoint in this regard. Some of the things they do to Rowan’s family made me cringe.)

 

And while this story is short, it’s filled with tension, horror and gore. It’s a real treat for horror fans who love reading stories of bad guys getting their comeuppance. I loved how Rowan uses farm equipment to go after the bad guys. I was cheering her on and loved how she was so brave as she fought them. The surprise at the end made this story all the more enjoyable and it’s definitely a story I will be reading again.

 

Farm Girl is a quick read for horror fans as well as readers who enjoy stories of vigilante justice. I loved reading this YA horror story and I felt it was a good story of how one teenager did what she had to do to save her family. A story of how one teen rises above a horrific nightmare thrust upon her family, Farm Girl is a story that will remind readers that you should never mess with a farm girl.

Within the pages of this book lurk people who delight in committing the most heinous of crimes and monsters eagerly hungry for the humans in their sights. The next story I read was even better than the last one. I read this book in a day, as it was hard to put down! I could not stop reading it once I began, and the cryptic endings made me hold my breath as I got to the very last surprising sentence.

 

This collection of stories starts off strong. The first story, “The Beach House,” had me thinking that it was a story about loss or grief, but then something completely unexpected happens that changed everything I thought I had figured out about this story. This plot twist had me eagerly reading more and what happened next took me by surprise. It’s a great story that lingered in my head long after I finished reading it.

 

“Penny’s Tea” was really horrific! I had no idea what to expect, though I understood what was happening. They say we should trust our instincts when we feel that something isn’t right with our bodies, and the character, Penny, really knew that she was dealing with something not only wrong but also unnatural. Loved the surprise at the end of this story! It’s a great body horror story that sent chills down my spine!

 

“Sweeter than Candy” was another enjoyable read. I have read this Halloween story before, when it was published in Halloween Horrors: A Fundraising Anthology, but of course I read it again and it was just as enjoyable to read again! That’s one good thing about spooky Halloween stories; they can be enjoyed many times over, especially during the month of October!

 

“Family is Forever” was also another awesome story in this book. When I started reading it, I had no idea what to expect. But as I got into this story, I was drawn into the mutual grief the cousins felt over yet another death in the family. They say that grief affects everybody differently, but for Daisy’s cousin, Rosie, she puts her unusual hobby to creative use in coping with the most recent loss.

 

All of the stories in this collection were enjoyable and I loved the last one, the title story, the best.

 

Tell Me How It Ends is a collection of spooky, haunting tales that are sure to frighten, terrify and alarm readers. These stories offer a combination of monstrous characters, horrifying spectacles and spinetingling scares that are unlike any other stories out there. Pick up this book to read if you’re looking for some scary stories to enjoy and you won’t be disappointed.

They say that a sequel should be better than the first book. Maybe this applies to prequels as well. The prequel to Toxic Maternal, Toxic Maternal: The Beginning by C.A. Baynam and Chisto Healy, is an eye-popping, jaw-dropping and spinetingling read! I would not say it is better than TM, but it definitely gets awful close to it!

 

In Toxic Maternal by C.A. Baynam, readers got to meet the mother from Hell, one who sexually, psychologically, verbally and physically abused her children, Sarah and Andrew. In this book, the prequel, we learn just what it was that made Mother, whose name is Caroline, into the kind of monster that we see in the book. Toxic Maternal: The Beginning shows the kind of horrible life Caroline endured in a home with an alcoholic and abusive father, along with a likewise abusive mother. However, her mother’s anger and hatred come from her dissatisfaction with her marriage and her life in general. Readers get to find out the shocking secret behind what it is that turns her into something else entirely, and just how it affects the young Caroline!

 

Just as with the other book, there is a lot of extreme gore, violence and sex in this story. However, some of the sex acts in this book are otherworldly, having a lot to do with the driving force that turns Caroline’s mother, Elena, as well as Caroline herself, into dark, evil and sinister forces. It happens a lot faster for Elena than it does for Caroline, and for this, Caroline ends up suffering through this horrifying transformation.

 

If you feel the need for some good blood and gore, you’ll find it in this story as well. There was one scene in particular where a character was murdered and it was so gory with lots of detailed slaughter, I loved it! I enjoyed reading this part of this story, and not just because that particular character deserved what he got but because it was written so well. It’s not “one and done” but a slow killing, with the character suffering from each blow.

 

And I must add that the character, Johnson, is so resourceful. I mean, he just suddenly appears with a machete. LOL He’s definitely a keeper!

 

So, is reading this prequel to Toxic Maternal recommended? I would not force it on anyone, but reading this story helped me to understand why what happened in Toxic Maternal happened. As I read through one scene that explained it all, I was like, “Oh. Well, now it makes sense.” What kind of mother would do such things to her own children in Toxic Maternal? If you ever wanted to know, you will find out by reading Toxic Maternal: The Beginning! Read this book to get a better understanding of why those chilling events unfolded, and in doing so, read about even more chilling events that sets everything in motion for a family of pure evil!
